Much of the country is working from home this week. Some are finding it challenging. We’ve been working virtually for many years. Here are some of our best tips.
Pro tips for newcomers to the Work From Home (WFH) movement:
Take a break. Don’t let work follow you home, even if it is literally in your home. Find a separate space and/or schedule for work and for home life and don’t let them overlap.
Make it professional. Turn off the TV and other distractions. You’re at work. Create an environment in which you can be productive.
Just log in. Use online tools like Google Docs, QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Expensify, Gusto. These allow you to work with your colleagues collaboratively without worrying about version control.
Stay connected. Avoid feeling isolated or out of the loop by keeping in communication with others. Use video and chat apps like Google Hangouts, Slack, and Zoom. Have virtual lunch with a friend!
Be organized. Use calendar and workflow apps to schedule your day so important things don’t slip through the cracks. Send event invitations with links to the web meeting.
Find the silver lining. Think about the benefits. No commute. Dress how you want. Work with your pets.
